Here are some tips from Ms. Dover and the ACHS English Department for how to approach the ACT Reading and other passages: 

  • Read each passage carefully.
     
  • Be prepared to read more than the line(s) number(s) from the question. You need context in order to understand what you are truly looking for (context = what is surrounding the lines in question).
     
  • When you have a question that asks about word meaning, place each option into the sentence and see how it fits or does not fit.
     
  • Look up words you do not know.
     
  • Tone is the author's attitude and is the emotion expressed towards the subject. It is determined by looking at words with strong emotions associated with them.
     
  • An anecdote is a story.
     
  • Internal conflict means that a character is struggling with an issue (internal emotions) within themselves.
     
  • Theme is a universal message about life.
     
  • Setting is the place and time of a story.
     
  • Be familiar with thesis statements. A thesis statement is a short statement, usually one or two sentences, that summarize the main point or claim of a piece. You may need to look up examples.
     
  • Be familiar with metaphor, simile, personification, allusion, and irony. You may need to look up examples and how these different devices are used.
