Reading “We are learning…” Statements

Reading Foundational Skills

RF 3.3  analyze and decode words

  1. Identify, decode and know the meaning of prefixes and suffixes (Latin suffixes). 

  2. Decode words with more than one syllable (multisyllabic) words.

  3. Read third grade irregularly spelled words. 

RF 3.4 read on third grade level and understand/comprehend.

  1. Read third grade level with purpose and understanding.

  2. Fluently read third grade level prose and poetry orally.

  3. Use context and rereading to self correct words and understanding. 


Reading Standards for Literature

RL 3.1 ask and answer questions to understand the text.  Make and support logical inferences from a text.

RL 3.2 identify and cite relevant (implicit/explicit) information from a summary to determine the theme. 

RL 3.3 Describe the characters in a story and how they affect the plot.

RL 3.4 Distinguish from literal and nonliteral language.  Determine how literal and nonliteral language affects the meaning of    the text. 

RL 3.5  Describe and provide evidence for how parts of the text contribute to the overall structure of various text including but not limited to linear, non linear and circular structures. 

RL 3.6 Distinguish their own perspective from the narrator and/or the characters.   Describe how the different perspectives shape the text. 

RL 3.7 Explain how illustrations contribute to the text (mood, character, setting).

RL 3.8 Not Applicable

RL 3.9 Compare/Contrast  the themes, settings and plots of stories written by the same author about similar characters. 

RL 3.10 By the end of the year, be able to use a variety of comprehension strategies to read, comprehend and analyze third grade text. 

 

Reading Standards for Informational

RI 3.1 ask and answer questions to understand the text.  Make and support logical inferences from a text.

RI 3.2 identify and cite relevant (implicit/explicit) information from a summary to determine the central idea. 

RI 3.3 Describe the relationships between individuals, a series of historical events, scientific ideas/concepts or steps in technical procedures in a text. 

RI 3.4 Determine the meaning of words and phrases and describe how they shape meaning. 

RI 3.5 Identify and describe text structures (comparison, cause and effect, problem and solution, sequence)

RI 3.6 Distinguish their own perspective from the author of a text. 

RI 3.7 Identify and explain how text features contribute to the meaning and clarity of a text (diagrams, graphs, photographs, sidebars)

RI 3.8 Describe how reasons and evidence support specific claims the author makes in a text. 

RI 3.9 Compare and contrast two or more informational texts on the same theme or topic

RI 3.10 By the end of the year, be able to use a variety of comprehension strategies to read, comprehend and analyze third grade text.
