Summer learning at ACES Camp SAFARI
It may be summer-time but the doors at Adair County Elementary School (ACES) have been open to students the past two weeks for Summer Camp SAFARI. While the mornings have been reserved for reading, math and science class, each afternoon has been filled with a wide variety of activities designed for good, old-fashion “fun”.
Students have enjoyed magic shows, a martial arts demonstration and a visit with snakes and other reptiles. They have practiced bicycle safety and enjoyed time outside each day.
Their culinary skills have been challenged as they learned how to make cupcakes and solar powered s’mores ovens as well as home-made ice cream. Art classes have offered students the chance to be creative and learn printmaking.
Working cooperatively while thinking independently, campers have conquered challenges and worked on essential skills such as communication, problem-solving and leadership.
Camp SAFARI, taught by certified teachers, has provided students with the opportunity to extended learning into the summer months. The camp is provided by the ACES Family Resource Center with support from The United Way of South Central KY, Adair County School District Transportation and Food Service departments, Migrant Education and Camp Casey 21st Century Community Learning Center.
