Library Curriculum

Kindgergarten Curriculum:

  • I can listen to and answer questions about a story/book
  • I can tell the characters in a story
  • I can retell a story verbally, written, or draw a picture
  • I can find parts of a book (cover, back, spine)
  • I can explain what an author and illustrator does

 

1st Grade Curriculum:

  • I can distinguish between fiction and non-fiction
  • I can tell and describe story elements (setting, plot, conflict, theme or moral of a story)
  • I can listen to and answer questions about a story/book
  • I can describe and compare/constrast characters in story
  • I can tell how parts of a story go together in sequence order

 

2nd Grade Curriculum:

  • I can identify the author's purpose (P.I.E. persuade, inform, and entertain) in a book.
  • I can use illustrations/words to understand characters/settings/story events
  • I can identify the beginning, middle, and end of a story
  • I can compare/contrast two or more versions of the same story
  • I can comprehend fables and folktales
  • I can determine the moral lesson of a story
  • I can identify different types of genres (fiction, non-fiction, poetry, fables, fairy tales, tall tales, folktales, fantasy)
  • I can tell the difference between a biography and an auto-biography
  • I can read a book and take an Acclerated Reader test by myself without help

 

Library "I Can" Statements

  • I can find an approriate a book and check it out at the check out desk
  • I can return my book on time in the proper place (the book return drop)
  • I can take good care of my library book and keep it in a safe place
  • I can use quiet voices in the library and during story time.
  • I can walk and keep my hands/feet to myself in the library.
  • I can go to the approriate center and use my time wisely and effectively after I check out my library or read the book that I checked out quietly.
