Students come to my room to improve their reading and literacy skills. Instruction focuses on teaching students to decode words, use phonemic strategies, develop an on grade reading vocabulary, increase a student's sight word vocabulary, and develop a student's individual reading metacognitive awareness. My goal for my students is to be able to read on grade level by the end of the year. Reading with fluency, accuracy, and understanding is the overall objective.
I use programs that are research based and proven to help my students increase their reading skills. Programs such as Reading Horizons, SRA, Ready Readers focus on teaching explicit decoding and reading strategies to students. These explicit decoding and reading strategies teach students to be self sufficient and independant readers. By understanding what strategies to use when their understanding of the text has broken down, they are able to self monitor their reading and understanding.
Students' progress is monitored weekly and all placements in the Title 1 classroom are attained from district and school assessment data.
