Welcome to choir! I am so glad you are a part of this class.

Course Description

We will learn a wide repertoire of musical styles (modern, classical, a capella, etc.) for our winter and spring performances, and hopefully a competition (more details to come)!! We are in Choir to sing and to get better at singing, so do NOT ask for karaoke or free days.

Performance Attire

High School students need an all-black outfit (preferably black pants or long skirt and black shirt) that meets the Adair County Schools dress code.

Middle School students need black pants/long skirt and a white shirt.

No hoodies or T-shirts allowed.

Fundraisers

I am hoping to participate in at least one competition this year and in order to cover the cost of music, supplies, gas, admission fees, etc. we are asking EVERY student to participate in our fundraisers throughout the year. This will cut the cost for activities for you in the future. If you have any issues with your child participating in fundraisers, please contact me!

Classroom Rules and Expectations

  • Respect:
    • Others
    • Yourself
    • Teacher
    • Materials (no gum, food or drinks allowed; the only exception: a water bottle with a lid)
  • Responsibility/Participation:
    • Be on time. The door will shut immediately after the tardy bell rings. If the door is shut, you are required to have a note from a teacher or go to the office and sign in before entering my room.
    • Listen when the teacher is talking.
    • Be here!!! Attendance is EXTREMELY important. This is a group effort; when you miss you hurt the whole group, not just yourself.
    • This is a performance class so everyone will be graded on participation every day.
    • Do NOT be on your cell phone during class. Phones are not allowed to be in class unless they are in your designated slot on the wall.
  • All missed assignments must be turned in no later than 3 school days after returning.
  • Have fun and make music!!!

Grading Policy

  • Rehearsals: 35% of total grade
    • Rehearsal grades are school participation grades that are given at the end of each week. One week is worth a total of 100 points. Every day is worth 20 points. Unexcused absences from school/rehearsal will be deducted at a rate of 50% a day. If students are missing necessary materials, deductions will also be made from their daily grade. Binders will stay in their designated area and will be checked daily for participation grade. I will be looking to see if the students have marked places I asked them to and if there is any damage to their music or folder (if there is significant damage it will come off their grade). If students are caught on their cell phones, they will have 5 points deducted from their daily grade, each time they are told to put it away. Daily breakdown:
      • Monday = 20
      • Tuesday = 20
      • Wednesday = 20
      • Thursday = 20
      • Friday = 20
        • Weekly total = 100
    • Dress Rehearsal is an extra rehearsal held outside of the usual school day, after school or on weekends. These are mandatory. If an absence cannot be avoided, students need to notify the teacher 2 weeks in advance of dress rehearsal, or as soon as possible. Excused absences should be accompanied with a note from parent/guardian, doctor’s excuse, court order, etc. Athletic games/events are excused with prior consent. Work does NOT count as an excused absence. Notice for these rehearsals will be given 1 month in advance of date.
      • Present = 100%
      • Excused absence = 80%
      • Unexcused absence = 50%
      • Absence without prior notice = 0%
