Description:

College Readiness means graduating high school students have the academic skills/knowledge to succeed in entry-level, credit-bearing college classes - without needing to take remedial courses. (Parents, this means you don't have to pay for expensive college classes that do not count toward your child's degree.  If your child is college ready, you save big $$$!)

Career Readiness means test scores and certification(s) indicate that graduating high school students have the academic skills/knowledge needed to succeed in post-secondary job training.  Career Readiness is measured through academic assessments (the ASVAB OR ACT WorkKeys) AND technical assessments/achievements (KOSSA assessment or Industry Certificates).

  • Understanding Benchmarks

In 8th and 9th grades, our students take the EXPLORE assessment. EXPLORE scores predict how well students will do on the PLAN assessment in 10th grade. The PLAN test predicts how well students will do on the ACT. The ACT predicts college readiness.  When students score below benchmark* in any area on one of these assessments, we provide academic intervention to help them get on track.

*"Benchmark"  is a term used to describe the minimum score researchers have found indicates a student is on track to be successful in entry-level college coursework.  ACT defines success as:
    • A 50% + probability of earning a B or higher in a corresponding entry-level college course
    • A 75% + probability of earning a C  or higher in a corresponding entry-level college course

Meeting a college readiness benchmark does NOT mean a student will get into a college of their choice.  (See Benchmarks in More Depth for information including average freshman ACT scores for many colleges and universities.)

Benchmarks can vary from state to state.  The following list shows Kentucky benchmarks for all of the tests that can be used here to measure CCR.  More information on each exam can be found by clicking on the exam name.
