Adair County High School junior Lejano Zavalija became the eighth student in school history to earn a top 10 individual finish at the state Future Problem Solving competition held March 13 in Louisville, the results of which were announced last week.
“It’s really satisfying because we all tried really hard as a team and we all worked together,” Zavalija says. “Even though we just missed a top 10 team finish, I probably wouldn’t have gotten [top 10 individually] without them.”
To crack the top 10, Zavalija outperformed some of the top students in the state, scoring in the 95th percentile out of more than 200 contestants. “I’m proud of him because he didn’t just go against the best teams in the state,” explains ACHS Academic Team head coach Brett Reliford. “He was going against the very best individuals from the best teams in the state, so it kind of multiplies the competition.”
