high school STLP team

The Adair County School District had an impressive showing Monday at the Regional STLP Showcase in Somerset.  All four schools surpassed the required score of 85 to advance to state competition, including Adair County High School’s squad.  Team members pictured are (front, from left):  Sara Dunbar, Michaela Watson, Maddie Loy, and coordinator Jenny Myers.  Second row:  Erwin Ruczienski and Trevor Cowan.  Back:  Tyler Miller.  Not pictured:  Katherine Curry, Chloe Hixson, and Linsey Grant.

All four schools in the Adair County District will compete at the state STLP (Student Technology Leadership Program) competition in Lexington next semester thanks to impressive showings at Monday’s Regional Showcase in Somerset, Ky.

“It’s amazing that all school projects were deemed worthy to advance to state level competition on our first district-wide effort,” says Technology Director Carla Perkins.  “I was confident in our students’ abilities and certain that our students were just as capable as any others in the state.”

Not only did all four schools’ STLP teams surpass the threshold score of 85 to qualify for state, they drew rave reviews from judges and heard feedback, suggestions, and tips to further improve their respective presentations before state, which is to be held in Rupp Arena.

“Now we take the same concept we had [at regionals] and just expand on it,” explains Adair County Elementary School STLP coordinator Sarah Dean.  “It’s a huge accomplishment.  This is my first year leading an STLP team so we went into it not knowing what to expect, but they rose to the occasion.”

Adair Primary Center coordinator Laura Marcum shares Dean’s enthusiasm.  “These kids planned the project, wrote the script, decided on their parts, recorded the video, edited the video, and then did a great job of presenting it,” Marcum says.  “They also came up with ways to try to impact the community, so we’re excited to see how far our project can go.”

The previously mentioned STLP teams will be joined in Lexington by the Adair County High School and Adair County Middle School squads, led by Jenny Myers and Adam Cox, respectively.  The entire district wishes all four teams the best of luck going forward and thanks the students for their stellar representation of their schools and community.

“I’m extremely proud of these students and so appreciative of the STLP coordinators,” Perkins says.  “Their time and efforts have certainly paid off.”
