The Adair County Middle School Academic Team took home second place honors in District Governor’s Cup Competition on Saturday, January 20th. The competition took place at Campbellsville Middle School where the team earned second place in Quick Recall and Future Problem Solving Team Events as well as District Runner-up in overall competition. This latest distinction comes on the heels of the team’s other victories this season including finishing 2nd at the 2017 6th Grade Showcase and in 2nd Place in the Green River Academic League in December.
In addition, the team qualified 4 students in 5 different events for the Regional Championships. Amber Loy (8th Grade) swept first place in Written Composition and 5th place in Language Arts. Luke Rich (6th Grade), in an impressive feat for a young competitor, took home 3rd place in Mathematics. 2017 District runner-up and Regional Language Arts Champion Alannah Bowman (7th Grade) claimed 1st place in Language Arts and 2nd in Arts and Humanities. Elizabeth Smith (7th Grade) rounded out an impressive team finish by capturing 5th Place in Science.
“This team works so hard,” Coach Vicki Leibeck-Owsley commented, “they have met or exceeded all of the goals that we have set as a team and we have high hopes for Regional Competition and for the future of this program.” Leibeck-Owsley and 6th Grade Coach Mary Ann McQuaide attribute the middle school team’s continued success to support from parents, teachers, and an academic partnership with the Adair County High School Academic Team who spent many afternoons of practice tutoring and mentoring younger players.
The Future Problem Solving team members were Luke Rich, William Rowe, Elizabeth Smith, and Mirah Murphy. Quick Recall members competing at District were Amber Loy, Alannah Bowman, Elizabeth Smith, Brody Blair, Mirah Murphy, Luke Rich, and William Rowe. The Governor's Cup Regional Championship will be held at Meece Middle School in Somerset on February 3rd.
